Tips for Turkey Hunting This Spring

Tips for Turkey Hunting This Spring

BEYOND THE DIRT | 04.06.2026

Spring turkey season is one of the most exciting times to be on your property. After a long winter, everything comes back to life—and for landowners, it’s the first real opportunity to see the results of your work.

Success in the turkey woods doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from preparation, understanding the birds, and knowing how to use your property to your advantage.

1. Hunt Where Turkeys Want to Be

Turkeys are predictable when their needs are met. Focus your efforts around:

  • Open strut zones (fields, logging roads, ridge tops)
  • Early-season food sources
  • Areas with good bugging habitat for hens

If your property provides a mix of these, you’re already ahead. The key is identifying where birds naturally want to spend time—and setting up there before they arrive.

2. Let the Woods Wake Up

One of the biggest mistakes hunters make is overcalling.

In the early morning, let gobblers sound off and reveal their location. A few soft tree yelps or clucks can be enough to let a tom know you’re there. From that point on, patience often kills more birds than aggressive calling.

3. Use Terrain to Close the Distance

Turkeys rely heavily on sight. Use the terrain and cover your property provides:

  • Set up just over rises or terrain breaks
  • Use timber edges to stay concealed
  • Avoid wide-open setups where you’ll get picked off

Getting within that final 100 yards without being seen is often the difference between success and watching a bird walk away.

4. Midday Can Be Prime Time

Once hens head to nest, gobblers often become more responsive.

If your schedule allows, don’t leave the property early. Cover ground, strike birds, and stay ready—midday hunts on your own land can be some of the most productive of the season.

More Than a Hunt

Turkey season is more than just chasing a bird—it’s a reflection of your land.

Properties with strong nesting cover, diverse habitat, and quality food sources consistently hold more birds. Every improvement you make—whether it’s managing timber, planting food plots, or creating edge—shows up in moments like these.

Because when you invest in your land, you’re not just creating opportunities—you’re building experiences that come back year after year.
